In 1977, I decided to travel overland from Delhi to Europe, and back. In 1977, an Indian was only allowed to buy 100 dollars from the Reserve Bank of India to pay for his foreign expenses. At the airport, you could buy another 8 dollars, to pay for a taxi at the other end. 108 is an auspicious number, but it takes the genius of bureaucracy to come up with the logic of separating this into two components, two transactions, each requiring a ream of papers filled out in quadruplicate.
This is a wonderful piece! We studied about the "draconian" provisions of FERA in law school and how it inconvenienced people. Your camera film roll anectode is a masterful example of show don't tell.
I recently saw the movie "The Guru", as I understand based on Ambani's father as an inspiration for the character. Sadly, hard to to remove and abolish the license raj.
Regardless of what Iโm doing, I always find myself stopping everything to read your newsletters. ๐๐
That's quite a generous compliment, Jeremy. Thanks for the attention.
