Goa is hot. And humid. Even in December, I don’t fancy running after 9 in the morning, and last November, when I swam for a relay team in the Goa Ironman*, conditions for the cyclists and runners were brutal. The 1.9 km swim is followed by a 90 km cycle ride, and I watched accomplished cyclists pedal like their legs had turned to lead. Most athletes didn’t finish their 21 km run until well after noon, when the sun was high, and the tarmac blazing. Eighty four cyclists exited the race, I was told, and I saw my friend Shridhar, normally swift of foot, shuffle into the last leg of the 21 km run.
The athlete who collapsed may not have recd medical aid promptly even though an ambulance was at hand. Our services are simply not geared up to do so. Look at the no of mortalities in road accidents. Pity the two bike riders last week who died in Gurgaon while out in a Sunday joy ride
Last year, I wrote on similar lines. An ultra-running buddy of mine follows Ed Viesturs's principle to the T. My friend has run over 110 ultra races (including 19 one hundred mile races).
This looks like is written just for me :) . When I returned from india in late september I was 210 lbs and committed to lose weight (courtesy amit varma's keto+intermittent fasting) . I did lose 40 lbs as we speak and in late november i committed myself to running the nyc marathon next year in november when I'll turn 45. I haven't run at all in my life and but started only now thinking one year should be good enough to train. My wife and people around me did ask me to start with a half marathon but i wanted to push myself and i dont even know if i can run for that long. Having read this I know i'll listen to my body now and to tell NO if i feel so . btw i am not on insta or other social media n avoid posting anywhere so this was just for me but its good to know what dangers lay ahead
All the very best with your plans for the NYC marathon. I suggest you find a trainer, who can help with the conditioning amd strength building that needs to accompany endurance work.
Reminds me years ago we could have lost a young enthu rider due to overdose of electrolytes during an ultra ride. Glad you brought this up, so many grey zones for outdoor community to build safer events.

Possible...
But collapsing on a race is.accidemt enough.

I had heard of such incidents, but only in the media. Never so directly.
Thanks
